The Fellowship of the Believers–Acts 2:42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Wednesday nights are part of my favorite times of the week.
Acts 2:42-47 is one of my favorite sections of Scripture.
Combining them makes my heart happy.
Wednesday nights at our church we have A Wednesday Night Experience. Simply put…we gather for ministry (choir), dinner together then prayer and scripture study.
Each week’s meal is prepared by someone who attends for the rest of us to enjoy together. We all take turns cooking and preparing.
Some weeks we have pasta. Some weeks it’s soup or chili. Other weeks it’s meatloaf or hamburgers on the grill. It really doesn’t matter what we eat. It matters that we eat it together. It’s a beautiful expression of the body of Christ gathering in Jesus’ name and giving, serving, dwelling if even for just a moment, and learning together.
Henri Nouwen once said: “We all need to eat and drink to stay alive. But having a meal is more than eating and drinking. It is celebrating the gifts of life we share. A meal together is one of the most intimate and sacred human events. Around the table we become vulnerable, filling one another’s plates and cups and encouraging one another to eat and drink. Much more happens at a meal than satisfying hunger and quenching thirst. Around the table we become family, friends, community, yes, a body. That is why it is so important to “set” the table. Flowers, candles, colorful napkins all help us to say to one another, ‘This is a very special time for us, let’s enjoy it!’”
Each week at our Wednesday Night Experience our bellies are filled, but so are our spirits.
